'If' has a complicated history. It started off as a poem I wrote after someone close to me passed away. That was in 2011. Prior to that, in 2009, I had written an instrumental trance piece called 'Stop/Time' for a Perpetual Emotion Machine album called 'The Unforetold'. I didn't really do anything with that album, except complete it and put it on the internet for free.

Later, when I was trying to do a new PEM album called 'The Worry Box' (a vocal album concept that eventually became 'Candor'), which never got completed, I put the poem and this track together with the intention of making it a two-song suite. So a demo was completed.

Then I had one of my many catastrophic hard drive crashes and I lost the work files for most of that material.

So when it came to looking for songwriting material for 'Candor', I immediately thought of that demo. Rather than try to recreate that version of the song for the new album I ended up re-recording it and giving it a ballad vibe instead. However, there were a lot of elements of that original demo that I really liked, including a scat harmony part and a really nice choral synth. So what ended up happening for the 'Candor' version was that I pitched down and stretched the demo, added super wet reverb, gated it, and then laid it softly in the mix. Not to mention that the original demo vocals almost act like a double-track to the new take. All this gave the ballad version a nice ambient vibe and the elements of the trance version can still be heard giving it some depth.

I'm quite happy with the new album version, but just for fun, here is a remastered version of the demo from 2014 for your amusement.
